Dalton man given 4 to 6 years in jail

A 28-year-old Dalton resident received a 4- to 6-year state prison sentence on Thursday when he pleaded guilty to trafficking in cocaine and related drug and weapons charges in Berkshire Superior Court.

Beside the trafficking charge, Martin J. Farrell of Chamberlain Street pleaded guilty to single counts of possession of Oxycodone with the intent to distribute, cultivating marijuana, illegal possession of a firearm, and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

He also pleaded guilty to 12 other charges regarding the possession of several prescription painkillers and anabolic steroids.

Farrell was arrested on Aug. 25, 2006, when officers from the Berkshire County Drug Task Force executed a search warrant on his residence. The officers found 150 grams of cocaine, with a street value of $15,000, under his bed. They also recovered 19 firearms, including rifles, handguns and shotguns, in the house, along with two cell phones, two marijuana plants, a scale, and small plastic bags typical of a large drug dealing operation.

Superior Court Judge John A. Agostini ordered Farrell to serve concurrent 4- to 6-year state prison sentences on the trafficking and possession of Oxycodone charges. He will serve concurrent jail terms on the remaining drug charges.
Agostini placed Farrell on three years probation for using a firearm during the commission of a felony. While on probation, Farrell must refrain from using either drugs or alcohol, and undergo counseling and drug tests.
